The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not.”-  Mark Twain

No Thank you Mayor Bloomberg, I can Make my Own Decisions

I’m sure that most of you have heard about the ban on sugary beverages that are over 16 oz. in New York City.  Despite whether or not it will help people lose weight, I don’t generally agree with what I consider unnecessary regulation.  If a company wants to sell a product, and a person wants to buy it, I don’t see why any outside party should have a say on the subject.  Unfortunately though, it seems that many people lack the faculties to make their own healthy choices, so Mayor Bloomberg thought he would “help them” by saving them from the evils of super-sized drinks.  Well, I think that the average WUDM reader can generally handle their own shit, so we don’t need anyone to regulate us.

We’ll Do it Ourselves!

While I don’t like being told what to do, I do like to exercise my self-discipline muscles pretty often.  One way I’ve traditionally done this is by periodically giving up something for a month, or three months, or longer.  I’ve also practiced my self discipline by committing to a new routine, also generally for a month or so.  Sometimes these routines stick, other times I drop them and pick up something else, or just go back to being a slob who kind of meanders through my days without a whole lot of awareness.  Lately I haven’t been challenging myself a whole lot, so lets start out slow, together!

Screw You Sugary Beverages!

I had been thinking about putting together a challenge series based off of my old habit of practicing self-discipline, but I just hadn’t got to it yet.  Well now I’m motivated.  These ads that I’ve been seeing a lot of lately, where the beverage companies are trying to downplay how terrible their products are for us, have inspired me.  I’m not drinking soft-drinks anymore….well, for a while.  I’m sure at some point I’ll answer the Sirens call of that sweet carbonated shit, but at at least not for another month.

The Challenge!

It’s simple, pledge to drink no soft-drinks of any kind, that includes diet drinks, for a period of 30 days.  Today is 07 June, so that means if you pledge today, you can crack one open on 06 July.  Why didn’t I wait to start this next month, on the first?  Because if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing now!

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now.”- Old proverb

If you’re going to join in on the challenge, even if you read the blog at a later date, please chime in on the comments and let us know.  I’m sure some people could use the support!
